When I first got the mill (in 2010-ish) that ended up being the donor for this project, a few people suggested lapping the dovetails together for better fit. Well, the end result is a fancy shaped lapping plate.
Long story short, I tried scraping through the embedded grit, but that kept dulling the scraper blade, so I got frustrated and set the thing aside. Last month I got the alert that LMS got the table assembly back in stock, so I will be using that now.Yuriyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11394499166280606198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4429789698339059066.post-70881203373460746942020-09-15T21:26:54.121-07:002020-09-15T21:26:54.121-07:00Hi, how’s this build going? I just recently got one of these mini mills and have found a number of posts on your website very helpful in upgrading it. Just a gearbox full of bits!!
There are metal(??) gear clusters available as replacements but no-one can assure me they are suitable. Not sure why. Quite strange. Maybe noisy??
Getting the Spindle Nut off to remove the spindle and broken gear cluster has been the biggest problem.
I quickly perceived the nut is left-hand but it won't budge.. looks like it's been lock-tited on and won't move even with significant heat. (I have removed the locking grub-screw!) and I'm concerned I'll break the c-spanner driving it off.
Do you know anything about this.? Appreciate any input from anybody.. Cheers... The solution was to replace the bottom bearing cover with a machined aluminum one which houses a TC40x55x5mm oil seal. Since I'm using sealed AC bearings I removed the garter spring and main lip from the seal, but since you're using open bearings you'd obviously want to keep the main seal, though could still remove the garter spring for reduced friction if using grease lubrication.

I have some pictures of the aluminum bearing covers and seals I made for my mini lathe here. The mill's are identical aside from the seal used:

http://benchtopmachineshop.blogspot.com/2017/02/lathe-spindle-upgrade.htmlZoltanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03688633386727439885noreply@blogger.com
